Once in a while someone can say something to you that will make you believe in yourself. It may be so simple but yet subconsciously powerful, especially when it is said by someone close to you.

It happened to me 'you see things differently to other people' I was told. I was using a canon 400D just to see how it worked, It was set on 'P' so little to do but aim and fire. I remember seeing some seed heads that looked so beautiful and wanted a photo of them, I could not get a focus on it at all. I knew nothing of photography then and had not much inclination to want to get to know really. My brother whose camera it was took a photo for me and yes, I do still have it in the archives today.

A couple of days after I was loaned an Nikon Coolpix E950, a camera then of 10years old. I loved it and went out into the garden to take photos of anything I wanted. I found a semi-dormant Bumble bee on a rose and studied that for a while, then a beautiful brick laid old garden path. I was starting to get an interest, prior to this my interest was the odd snap at Christmas and days out.

When told something valuable and it clings to you it is time to act. I was loaned the Coolpix camera until I could afford my own and I enrolled at my local College in Tonbridge on a one evening a week course for one Year.  I saved eventually for a Canon 500D to do the rest of the course with, which I enjoyed very much, it was basic but fun and I went on to pass and get my certificate NCFE. That was in 2010 - 2011 The rest of my abilities have been self taught and sourced from books and the internet.

Now, three cameras later Adobe Lightroom and many other useful tools for post editing, I have changed  what I want from the photography I do. Everyone starts with basic photography, we have too to get to know the camera etc. I felt there was more to this after the shot was taken. I felt I could more with the photos from my camera and give them a different life, an unusual life. I have always liked post editing but to create with post editing is what i like most.

From a simple 'p' setting to a loaned camera, to being given a compliment and saving up for the 500D, To going through a course in College then to buying my third camera and advancing my mind and focus and finally arriving in a new place for a new adventure.

I look back on this every now and again to feel how it all began and to see where the changes have come. I do still work with my camera and incorporate some of those images into the work I do now.

“You don't make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved" ~ Ansel Adams ~

“Of course, there will always be those who look only at technique, who ask ‘how’, while others of a more curious nature will ask ‘why’. Personally, I have always preferred inspiration to information”   `~ Man Ray ~
